The Worst Statues Ever Made Part 1
Statues have graced our world for thousands of years; they are an historic form of art that captures the likeness of someone we deem important for people to remember for years to come. From the gods themselves to Ronald McDonald there have been some incredible examples of the artform over the last couple of millennia. Sadly though, not all have been as revered as Michelangelo’s David, some rather leave us recoiling in fear and disgust whilst some just leave us laughing. These are examples of some such statues, statues that both memorable and breath taking but for all the wrong reasons. So, without further ado I present some of the worst statues this world has ever seen.
Recently, in her hometown of Sevnica, Slovenia a statue of the First Lady Melania Trump was revealed and oh boy was it a doozy! I’d be surprised if you’ve not seen this already as it has widely been reported on in the news. An artist from the US named Brad Downey hired a local chainsaw expert by the name of Ales Zupevc to carve this masterpiece from a single tree trunk. Unsurprisingly the statue has been surrounded by controversy but to be honest that’s quite fitting seeing as most things to do with the Trump family usually are. Comments have been made stating that the statue is “a disgrace”, some have likened it to the children’s cartoon character ‘Smurfette’ whilst many have questioned the statues likeness to Melania. I’m not so sure myself, seems to have captured that wooden expression of hers quite well.
Okay so this one is technically a bust but how could I not include it? I mean check out that face, it’s so ridiculous that it’s disturbing. The Ronaldo bust was first unveiled in 2017 at an airport named after the footballer on the island of Madeira in Portugal and was sculpted by a local artist named Emmanuel Santos. It is fair to say that almost every feature is off on the face, his eyes are too close together, his mouth is strangely small, and his neck is huge. That being said it’s easily one of the most memorable statues I’ve ever seen so it’s achieved something.
It would take some real grit and determination to love this Lucy. In Lucille Ball’s hometown of Celoron, New York a statue was put up to honour the beloved actress. Unfortunately, what was produced was a hideous nightmare that looked nothing like the lady and was dubbed ‘Scary Lucy’. One fan took it upon themselves to start a campaign to get the mayor to replace the statue to one more befitting of its favourite daughter. The fan anonymously spoke in interviews claiming that it looked “like a monster” and that “When you see it at night, it is frightening”. Both in my opinion are fair comments, just look at that thing. Luckily the campaign was a success and now there is a much better, far more flattering likeness of the lady put in its place.
